Today the FDA issued a nationwide recall of the dietary supplements Axcil and Desirin. These drugs are marketed as dietary supplements but they definitely focus on sexual performance. They were recalled because an FDA laboratory analysis showed that supplements contain potentially dangerous ingredients that are unlisted. The supplements contain sildenafil, the active ingredient in many erectile dysfunction medications. The products also contain two other analogs of sildenafil. These unlisted ingredients could pose serious health risks as they may interact with nitrates causing dangerously low blood pressure levels.

Patients with diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease commonly take nitrates. Sexual disfunction is also commonly associated with these illnesses. I think the FDA is worried that some people may seek out these kinds of drugs to improve sexual performance and this could be potentially harmful. The FDA urges consumers to discontinue use of these products immediately and consult a physician if complications do arise.

This is the second recall of this sort in as many months. On August 31st Zenecore tablets were recalled for similar violations.
